Supporting Refugees at home and away

saywelcomeFrom the Welcome to Australia website:

We believe Australians are a welcoming, generous and compassionate people. On Saturday, October 31 you’re invited to #SayWelcome in cities and towns across the nation.

We believe an Australia where prejudice is unpopular and cruelty hurts at the polls, is possible. An Australia that recognises the equality and dignity of all people – no matter who you are, where you’re from or how you arrived here – and extends our values of fairness and friendship to everyone. We dream of a nation that celebrates diversity, made up of communities where people of our First Nations, asylum seekers, refugees, international students, skilled migrants and every other human being can experience the joy and security of belonging.

Walk Together takes place on Saturday 31 October 2015.

In cities and regional centres all over Australia, you’re invited to join this celebration of diversity and present a picture to our leaders and media of the Australia that is possible; a nation known for our compassion, generosity and welcome. Faced with increasing instances of fear and prejudice, it’s more important than ever for values of compassion and welcome to reign. For the sake of our futures, it’s time to Walk Together.

Where: State Library to Federation Square

We all know that  Act for Peace works hard to make a difference to people in some of the most desperate and difficult humanitarian crises around the world.  This week The Huffington Post of Australia interviewed an Act for Peace Australian aid worker who has just returned from a fortnight in Jordan with Syrian refugees.  Her experiences there were some of the most heart wrenching she has witnessed. She told the interviewer:
“It is unbelievable the trauma these families have gone through. These are just everyday families, who remind me of ordinary people in Australia.”

Act for Peace will again be raising money through the Christmas Bowl appeal, and much of the money raised goes towards helping those in refugee camps around the world.   This year they are adding a new initiative to this, inviting people to  bring together family and friends to bake and sell biscuits for the Christmas Bowl. Cooking together can be fun for young and old, and the money  raised will help those in great need. Sign-up today to receive your free fundraising kit! – See more here

Every biscuit you bake and sell can help change a life this Christmas!

For the first time in history, there are nearly 60 million displaced people in the world who need our help. By joining us for this special fundraiser you will be standing by the men, women and children living through conflict and displacement. Make a difference this Christmas and show refugees around the world they are not alone.

Find out how you can help bake the world a better place.

If you would like to give to the Christmas Bowl appeal you can give online here.
