Happy Healthy Merri Creek

Murray Cod in Merri

Murray Cod in Merri – photo CERES staff

Today, some more good news about the water health in the Merri Creek.   On a recent Saturday, one of the staff and his fishing obsessed son were trying to catch carp in the creek.  They were using a bait of bread coated in jelly crystals.  To their great surprise they hauled in a 50cm Murray Cod. Yes, the fish (pictured above) was fine, and did go back into the creek to swim away. Melbourne Water were notified.  Platypus were sighted in the same vicinity of the Merri creek in early Spring.  I’d reckon those monitoring the health of the water might be a little bit chuffed. I know there are  many other stories of where things are not going well for the environment but I cant help but feel  my spirit lift with this news.  Inspired too,  to go on believing that we really can make a difference.  It wasn’t all that long ago that the CERES site was a rubbish dump leaking fetid, putrid waste into the Merri. Today it is a beautiful, buzzing, thriving hive of energy and life.  So, with even more enthusiasm, we will continue our gestures, both large and small,  to live out our eco-faith.
