Green’s Senator, Sarah Hanson Young has sent out notice of a petition she is seeking support for, so as to urge the Government to take action.  Her letter follows:

A humanitarian emergency is unfolding in our region. Rohingyan refugees are currently adrift in South-East Asian seas, suffering from starvation. There are reports that people may have already died.

This human tragedy is a result of countries closing their borders and turning boats with men, women and children away.

The United Nations has called for an immediate international search and rescue mission to save the lives of these people.

Tell the Prime Minister that Australia needs to rescue the 8000 Rohingyan refugees adrift at sea.

Australia must step up and take a leading role. As a regional leader, we have an international responsibility to provide immediate assistance.

Lives are at risk and Australia must help to provide refuge to those stranded at sea.

Stand up for people who need Australia’s help, and sign our petition.

Turning a blind eye is not acceptable. We are a nation with a big heart. We must do the right thing.

Yours in hope,

Sarah Hanson-Young
